Professor in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Kendra L. Hearn, Ph.D.'s education and life's work has been devoted to creating learning environments that inspire children (including her own), and that change the world. Her mission has mostly been lived through a 15+ year career as a teacher and district administrator in public K-12 school districts, including Detroit Public Schools, as well as West Bloomfield School District where she was Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, Curriculum Director, and a high school English teacher. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Clinical Practice at the University of Michigan, her alma mater. She teaches a variety of courses, including English, Teaching Towards Social Justice in Secondary Schools and education leadership at the School of Education where she also serves as the department chair of secondary teacher education. She regularly consults with schools and districts, and gives invited talks and presentations about teaching. However, her service and volunteer activities through organizations, such as her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., are similarly aligned. She has been graced with the Milken Family Foundation's National Educator Award and earned National Board for Professional Teacher Standards Certification ('98) among numerous other honors. She, of course, is a lifelong learner herself, and has earned degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (B.A. '93, English & teaching cert); University of Detroit Mercy, Detroit (M.A. '95, Education Administration); Wayne State University, Detroit (Ph.D., '05, Curriculum & Instruction). One of her most significant learning experiences was as a Fulbright-Hays Scholar to South Africa ('08). Dr. Hearn lives in Ann Arbor, not, too far from her hometown of Detroit.
